RK PPD Zagreb or full name “Rukometni Klub Prvo Plinarsko Drustvo Zagreb” is a recognize name on European handball scene. On recently finished SEHA League Final Four they took 3rd place, losing by only 1 goal in semi-finals against the winner MKB-MVM Veszprem and then beating Vardar in the match for third place.
After the SEHA League is over they are turning toward their new goal FC Barcelona and quarter-finals of EHF Velux Champions League. Almost 20 years ago clash between Barcelona and Zagreb was classic of European handball, but since then Barcelona is still force and Zagreb is always near Final four just couldn’t reach it. Analyst always says that it’s not enough to have only good players; you need to have a good coach and Zagreb Coach Veselin Vujovic is an excellent example.
Vujovic was excellent player that played for RK Metaloplastika Sabac, Barcelona and Granollers and was first player that received title IHF World Player of the Year. With Yugoslavian he won one gold and bronze Olympic Games medal and one gold and silver IHF World Championship medal.
Recently he conducts an interview for Croatian media in which he talked about the upcoming games against Barcelona. Vujovic said that Barcelona is coming in a great time, since they (Zagreb) are in good form. They asked him was it ok that he threaten Barcelona before their first game in Zagreb?
“When you have such a quality team and you show them that you believe in them and they replay to you with the same passion, then I have a right to threaten anyone that is coming to play against us in Zagreb no matter is their name Kiel or Barcelona.”
Maybe Zagreb will not kick-out Barcelona but Vujovic already have a lot of problems, since after this season Zagreb players are one of most wanted players in Europe. But Vujovic is not afraid, he said that he talks with his players and they know that in Zagreb they could get opportunity to play on every game and that is what is most important to them.
For the end Vujovic said that their chance in the game against Barcelona is that Barcelona doesn’t know how to play hard games. In Liga ASOBAL they are winning with 10 or more goals and their champions’ league group was very weak. In Zagreb they will be facing a team that is going for win and behind them are 20 000 fans cheering for them.
