As the Toronto Raptors finished their best regular season in franchise history, one of their players got rewarded for his excellent plays throughout the campaign. Lou Williams was named the NBA’s Sixth Man of the Year for the 2014-15 season. The guard received 78 first-place votes and was way ahead of Isaiah Thomas in the final results.
For most of the franchises in the NBA, a Sixth Man of the Year Award isn’t exactly something special, but for the Raptors it is huge. Thanks to his award, Williams became the first Toronto player to win a non-rookie-of-the-year award and also the first Raptor to win any kind of award since 1999. The guard definitely deserved to get it, as he averaged a career-high 15.5 points and 2.1 assists per game while coming off the bench. It should be noted that Williams was the third leading scorer for the Raptors, as only DeMar DeRozan (20.1 points per game) and Kyle Lowry (17.8 points per game) averaged more points during the season. Furthermore, Williams should be praised for the way he recovered from the ACL tear that he suffered two years ago. There aren’t a lot of players that tear an ACL and return to full strength, let alone win an award.
The Raptors will definitely need Williams in the playoffs, as the team is currently down 0-1 after the Washington Wizards defeated them in Toronto. In that game, the Sixth man of the Year didn’t play the way he usually did during the regular season, as he finished with just 10 points on 4-of-16 shooting. If the Raptors want to continue deep into the postseason, they will need Williams to step up and play at his best.
