What a season it was for the New Orleans Pelicans young star, Anthony Davis. Davis has emerged one of the best players in the NBA after just three seasons under his belt, and he’s even got a lot more potential to improve. Because of his MVP-type campaign and his young age, the New Orleans Pelicans are reportedly ready to invest a lot in him.
According to numerous sources, the Pelicans will offer Davis a five-year contract extension that is worth about $140 million. The only question is whether the player will choose to sign a deal this summer or the next one, because after a year the salary cap is expected to rise drastically. In an interview regarding the topic, Davis commented:
“It’s a business, so whether this July or next July or the July’s down the road, it’s going to come up,” he said. “When that time comes, you are going have to deal with it and make tough decisions.”
During the current campaign, Davis averaged 24.4 points, 10.2 rebounds and 2.9 blocks per game while also posting a 30.81 player efficiency rating, which is the eleventh highest number in the entire NBA history. Because of these stats and the fact that Davis is expected to improve in the following seasons, it’s no wonder that the New Orleans Pelicans are ready to do whatever it takes to keep him. However, the final decision will be still made by Davis, and he may choose to either demand a shorter contract or to become a free-agent. In my opinion, the young star will wait for the next summer to come and the salary cap to rise, in order to receive more money. Whatever he decides, the Pelicans would most likely give him what he wants.
