NBA News: Kawhi Leonard to receive a max-deal from the San Antonio Spurs

Basketball, NBA News:

There have been some speculations whether the San Antonio Spurs will offer Kawhi Leonard a max deal this summer, but recently it has been reported that the franchise is ready to give the player what he expects. It seems that Leonard is pretty happy in a Spur uniform, and even though he is going to become a free-agent after the end of the current campaign, I don’t think he will leave his current team. There have been a number of reports recently, and all of them state that the player will remain where he is.

“For now, there’s no scenario where Leonard plans to pursue offer sheets on the market, league sources tell Yahoo Sports. Leonard wants to be a Spur, and the Spurs are expected to come calling on July 1 with the max offer that they resisted delivering Leonard in the preseason, a move born out of preserving cap space to bring on a star free agent this summer.”

If the Spurs get Leonard to sign on 1st July, it will be a great success for them, as Kawhi has definitely improved this season, and he is without a doubt an elite star. Furthermore, if everything goes well during the contract talks, expect San Antonio to go after LaMarcus Aldridge during the summer. Aldridge has mentioned a couple of times that he wants to stay with the Portland Trail Blazers, but the fact that they will most likely exit the playoffs in the first round may change his mind.

The update from the San Antonio Spurs about the offer for Leonard came just a day after he scored a career-best 32 points and won the Defensive Player of the Year Award. He is definitely the biggest asset that the franchise currently has.
