English Premier League Match Preview
A month from now and both sides were competing furiously for a Champions League spot, however, with the late season dip in form serving as mutual, the best Southampton as well as Tottenham could do this season is to finish in the 5th spot.
While for Southampton it would be a heart-break after being so strong for the most of this season, they might feel that the squad has delivered everything it can to be counted among the English best. However, for Tottenham, it seems a repeat telecast of the last season, and the season before it and so on.
Talking about Tottenham and although they have a lethal striker in Harry Kane in their suburbs, the Whites have failed to take full advantage of their main man. While many might refer to them as a 1 man team, this notion is altogether rubbish looking at the team’s stats for this season. Although he has scored 20 goals already and is the headline grabber of late, the fact that both Eriksen and Chadli have chipped in with 10 and 9 goals respectively has been gone un-noticed.
Taking a look at Southampton and although they didn’t have a single player who is in double figure in terms of goals, their rise this season has epitomized the concept of team-spirit. With 13 different goal-scorers at the helm, Southampton have been a flag-bearer of the neutral fan this season in the Premier League.
Team News:
With the visiting side having doubts over the fitness of both of their full backs, Eric Dier and Ben Davies might nod their way in the starting 11 at the expense of Kyle Walker and Danny Rose. Apart from that, there is a good news for the Spurs faithful as the French stopper Hugo Lloris would be expected to come back in goal after gaining full match fitness this week.
Like most of this season, Jay Rodriguez is still recovering from the injury that ruled him out of last year’s World Cup. Apart from that, the highly rated midfielder Victor Wanyama would be on the sidelines as he is still recovering from his injury. Fraser Foster would be out along with Erik Mayuka both of whom have a long way to go before coming back into the starting 11.
Stats:
• Southampton have conceded fewer shorts on target than any other side in the Premier League this season (93).
• Southampton have conceded the least amount of goals in the Barclays Premier League this season (24).
• Tottenham have won all of their last 5 fixtures against Southampton in the League.
• Jermain Defoe is the last player to score a hat-trick in this particular fixture. He achieved this feat in 2004.
Probable lineups:
Tottenham:
Lloris – Dier – Fazio – Vertonghen – Davies – Mason – Bentaleb – Chadli – Eriksen – Lamela – Kane
Southampton
Davis – Clyne – Yoshida – Fonte – Bertrand – Davies – Schneiderlin – Ward-Prose – Tadic – Mane – Pelle
Southampton Vs Tottenham will take place at the Saint Mary Stadium on Saturday, 25th April.
