NBA News: Is Rajon Rondo worth the money he demands - should the Mavericks consider letting him go?

Basketball, NBA News:

The summer of 2015 is getting nearer and that would mean that a lot of players will be free-agents when the time comes. Rajon Rondo is one of those guys and even though he has stated multiple times that he likes in Dallas, the question is – do they like him? Mavericks’ owner, Mark Cuban, did a lot of work to sign Rondo this season, but the point-guard hasn’t really been able to fit in the team as everyone expected. Rondo hasn’t been effective enough and on top of that, he got in an argument with the team’s coach, Rick Carlislie, and was given a one-game ban because of that.

Carlislie has tried different ways to implement Rondo in the Mavs offensive flow, but most of them have failed. Dallas, as a team, is trying to play a free-flowing game with a lot of passing, that ensure open shots, but Rajon hasn’t looked very comfortable with that. The initial idea was that the point-guard would be able to give the offense an alternate way of creating shots. Nevertheless, Rondo has been more of a flow-stopper than something positive for the Mavericks.

Furthermore, Rondo isn’t exactly what you call a sharp shooter – he is in his ninth season in the NBA and he’s shooting just 31.7 percent on three throws, 33.2 percent on mid-range shots and 34.1 percent on shots outside the restricted area. He was playing a bit better in Boston and his assists numbers were a lot higher, but that was mainly because he was surrounded by veterans that opponents didn’t want to leave open. However, now he is in a bit different situation and we can see that he has been overrated because of his teammates in Boston.

It would be very interesting to see whether the Mavericks will re-sign him in the summer or they will let another team have him. He has the championship mentality, but does he really have the skills to be an elite superstar? A lot of people think he still does, but his on-court actions have been saying different things. Rondo wants big money this offseason, but is he worth them?
