THW Kiel confirm activation and signing of Steiner Ege from handball pension

Handball News:

German powerhouse THW Kiel was hit by injury of his first goalkeeper Andreas Palicka. First medical diagnoses suggest that Palicka injured his quadriceps and optimistic plan for his recovery is at least three weeks. For the important upcoming weeks THW Kiel was left with two goalkeepers Johan Sjostrand and Kim Sonne.

THW Kiel announces today that they sign a contract with Steinar Ege, or maybe it’s better to say they reactivate him from handball pension. Why did they sign another goalkeeper on such a short notice, explained THW Kiel managing director Thorsten Storm. He said that they start this season with three goalkeepers and that in this decisive stage they want to continue with the same amount of goalkeepers.  Storm said that Palicka recovery might take longer than three weeks and because of that they act like they did in this situation. It’s still question how will Sjostrand and Sonne react on reactivation of Ege. Storm said that Kiel coach Alfred Gislasson still have a lot of confidence in both Sjostrand and Sonne and he hope that Ege experience will be of great help to them also. With the transfer window closing in handball, THW Kiel only chance for signing new players is to sign a player without a contract this season.

For Steinar Ege this will be his second return to THW Kiel, he said that he is happy  with this given opportunity to play in front of 10 000 spectators. Ege said that once Storm asked him to help them he didn’t need long to think it about it. Ege joined THW Kiel first time in 1999; with them he won two German championships and EHF Cup before he moved to Spain CBM Galdar. For Norway national team Steinar Ege made 262 appearances.

With nine rounds until the end THW Kiel is now 1st team in Bundesliga with 48 points, two point’s more than second Rhein-Neckar Lowen and eight points in front third SC Magdeburg. They are also playing in EHF Velux Champions League where they demolished Flensburg-Handewitt in round of 16, total score was 63-49 (30-21; 33-28) for THW Kiel. Last obstacle before final four will be MOL-Pick Szeged from Hungary.
