Although the January transfer window is well beyond us, the market of the transfer rumors never gets dull even when the transfer windows are closed. And if reports coming out of various media outlets are believed to be true, then the Etihad based giants are lining up a whooping bid for the Portuguese Cristiano Ronaldo in the summer transfer window. Having lost the El-Classico amid some shaky attack, Real Madrid fans would be furious if their prized asset leaves them in the summer.
Having won 1 LA Liga and a famous Champions League crown during his stay at the Santiago Bernabeau, Cristiano Ronaldo was always linked with a move back to his mother club Manchester United. However, with the outrageous price tag with which the Portuguese superstar is always associated with, Manchester United were never really in hunt of the Portuguese.
However, they might rue their approach in the summer as the noisy neighbors from the Etihad are lining up a move for Ronaldo, if reports coming out from Spanish acclaimed journalist Graham Hunter are to be believed. Residing in Spain and being a columnist for Sky sports, Hunter always keeps tab on the recent transfer rumors in which Real Madrid is mentioned.
Giving his interview to a local news agency, Graham Hunter unearthed a marveling story in which he claimed that Manchester City players are sure that the club will launch a massive bid for Ronaldo in the summer. Here is what he had to say: –
“I know that the players at Manchester City were talking very, very firmly that they believed there was a successful move coming from that club over the last couple of weeks,” said Hunter.
Whether that makes it true or not, I wouldn’t like to say.
What we know is the mega clubs, with petrodollars, there’s never been a better time to say: ‘Well, would you like to cash in on your chips?'”
Why this move looks unlikely – – –
Even though these are early days in completing summer deals as 3 months are still between now and the official opening of Summer transfer window, the wheel of the transfer window has started churning. One loop hole that might tempt Manchester City to NOT go after the Portuguese will be their own financial status.
Even though Manchester City didn’t had much to say in the summer transfer window of 2014, sanctions were imposed on them as they breached the rules that are imposed by the FIFA fair play governing body. As a result of their act, Manchester City were reduced to 21 players for UEFA Champions League this season – 2 less than the normal size of a team that competes in the Champions League.
That when put into broader prospect means that if they want Cristiano Ronaldo at the Etihad next season, Manchester City will have to see off one of their own stats before landing the Portuguese. And with none of their stars – except Sergio Aguero, being in the same class as Ronaldo, a scenario of Aguero leaving the Etihad to give way to a 30-year-old Cristiano Ronaldo seems unlikely,
