Murray wins Davis Cup opener against United States, Robson eyes Miami comeback

Tennis Updates:

Andy Murray beat Donald Young in four sets to give Great Britain a 1-0 lead in their Davis Cup World Group tie against the United States in Glasgow. The British number one raced through the first two sets in 46 minutes on his way to a 6-1 6-1 4-6 6-2 victory. Murray was broken in game 10 of the third set but dominated the fourth.

James Ward plays the second rubber against John Isner on Friday afternoon, with the reverse singles on Sunday following Saturday’s doubles match.

“It was pretty special,” Murray told BBC Sport about his first match in his native Scotland since 2011.

“I’m glad I managed to play a good match and win.

“I played at an extremely high level for the first two sets and it was tough to keep that intensity up.

“My emotions were high when I came out and I had a lull in the middle of the third set but I managed to have a good fourth set.”

Laura Robson is set to begin her comeback at the Miami Open later this month after spending over a year out through injury. The former British No 1 started off her 2014 season at the Hobart International but had to withdraw in the first round due to a wrist injury.Robson last played a match at the Australian Open last January, where she lost in straight sets in the opening round against Kirsten Flipkens from Belgium.Robson subsequently had to miss out on the French Open, Wimbledon and US Open as a result of undergoing surgery on her left wrist.

The 21-year-old’s name no longer appears on the entry list for next week’s WTA Tour even in Indian Wells. She has, however, been given a wild card into qualifying in Miami in a fortnight’s time.

The Olympic mixed doubles silver medallist had hoped to be fit for this year’s first Grand Slam in Melbourne but did not make it and plans to return at low-key events in the US were shelved.

Wrist injuries are notoriously troublesome for tennis players and Robson’s team’s focus has always been on ensuring the Briton is not rushed back before she is ready.

Assuming her progress remains on track, Robson, who no longer has a ranking, will play her first match in more than 14 months in Florida.
