Manuel Pellegrini: Winning the title isn't necessary to keep my job

Manchester City News:

Following 2 defeats in a matter of 5 days, Manuel Pellegrini was mounted by some scathing criticism from his fans. Although that defeat against FC Barcelona wasn’t that tough to swallow for the Citizens, defat at Anfield has opened the flooding-gates of criticism for the Chilean. That defeat at the hands of Liverpool means that the Citizens are now 5 points behind Chelsea, who have a game in hand as Chelsea played in Capital One Cup Final last weekend.

Although the Chilean has refused the notion of him being under any sort of pressure, brief history of the new ownership at the Etihad gives a clear indication of their thinking. Sacking Mark Hughes in the mid-season before eradicating Roberto Mancini a year after he won the 1st Premier League title for Manchester City in 44 years, Manchester City ownership has a knack of winning title on consistent basis.

Lagging Chelsea by 5 points ahead of their game against West Ham, the future of Manchester City in the Champions League is also in doubt after their 2-1 defeat at the hands of Barcelona. Even though Manchester City weren’t the favorites to beat the odds against Barcelona, it was the tactical naivety of the Chilean that allowed Barcelona to run riot.

That defeat means that they have to score at-least twice at the Camp Nou while keeping the home side quiet – an accolade which not many teams have managed against Barcelona.

But for Pellegrini, whose tactics were exposed twice in a matter of 5 days, the Chilean has refuted all sort of claims that were linking him to face an axe in summer.

‘’When I signed my contract nobody told me about winning five titles in five years. That was what (chief executive) Ferran Soriano said to the media. But that doesn’t have to be one a year’’

‘’There are different ways of analysing things. Winning trophies is only one of them. Maybe last year nobody thought we were going to win the title but we did. To think about the future is the worst thing. I don’t do that. The most important thing is to continue playing with the same style. We won’t change.’’

However, with the Premier League table providing a difficult picture to Manchester City ownership, the ball will be in their court regarding the future of the Chilean at the Etihad.
