Manchester United went on a great run after a dismal start to the season but all of that amazing results have been old memory as the team has just won 2 of their last six games, drawing most while losing one to Southampton. The results are not that much a problem as is the current style of play, lack of attacking prowess and clueless players on the pitch. The entire Manchester United team look out of sorts and Van Gaal’s excuses of philosophy and improvement cannot go on for much longer.
A match against Cambridge United, a team ranked two divisions below them and currently the lowest ranked team in the FA Cup, it was supposed to be the perfect match for United to progress further. After a seemingly poor display against Yeovil Town, United fans were hoping for a dominant and thrashing display against minnows and to see their stars perform according to their price tags.
In their 1-0 defeat against Southampton, Manchester United could not muster a single shot at goal at their home, a stat that could shock any football follower. The likes of Falcao, Di Maria, Mata and Rooney failed to test the goalkeeper which led to an embarrassing defeat.
The same weakness in front of goal was imminent against Cambridge United when United failed to create decisive chances against a lowly opposition despite managing 75% of the possession. A chance here or there, a moment of individual skill was all United could muster up in a toothless display against Cambridge United.
The players constantly passed the ball back to defense, afraid to take on the risky front pass. No matter what Van Gaal might say, his philosophy has certainly not worked and the team looks utterly bewildered and disjointed. Players do not play as a team and there is no cohesion.
Van Gaal has little time to get things right or his reign might very well end up like that of his predecessor, David Moyes.
Final Score: Cambridge United 0-0 Manchester United
