Just as the Detroit Pistons were gathering speed towards the eight spot in the Western Conference they received one big slap on the face. Earlier today, their starting point-guard, Brandon Jennings was diagnosed with a season-ending tear in the Achilles tendon of his left leg. The injury occurred on 24th January in Detroit’s game against the Milwaukee Bucks. This is quite a blow for the Pistons, as they were finally able to find a solution to their abysmal play in the beginning of the season.
The timeline for the return of Jennings was revealed by no other than himself through his Twitter account, as he posted the following message – “6/9 months.” Earlier in the day he posted another message that said “Not being able to play basketball is the worst thing.” – and it’s hard to argue with him. Furthermore, it’s bad not only for him, but for the entire Pistons squad. This injury could affect his team pretty badly, after their short renaissance period after the Josh Smith trade had been made. D.J. Augustin will most likely take the starting role for the rest of the season, but this surely isn’t something new for him. We can all remember Augustin playing in the starting five for the Chicago Bulls last season when Derrick Rose went down with an injury of his own.
It’s a bit soon to tell if the Pistons lost their chances of reaching the playoffs, but let’s still not forget that are quite capable of surprising everyone. Jennings will surely be missed, but Augustin is one solid backup that has proven that he is capable of being starter. Detroit (17-27) are really close to the eight spot in the East right, which is currently occupied by the Charlotte Hornets (19-26), a team very similar to the Pistons in term of a bad start to the season.
Let’s all wish Brandon Jennings a speedy recovery and a quick return to the game of basketball!
