"De Klassieker" disappoints everyone, Eredivisie R19: Ajax - Feyenoord 0-0, Match Report

This afternoon at Amsterdam Arena biggest game in Netherland football has been played – “De Klassieker” (The Classic). De Klassieker is a match between Ajax and Feyenoord, this was their 176 match Ajax is better with 79 wins while Feyenoord manage to get 55 wins.

When people talk about “De Klassieker” first thing that comes in mind are riots and violence between fans. Probably the most infamous event happened in 1997 near Beverwijk since then it has been known as “Battle of Beverwijk”. In the fight between hooligans Ajax fan Carlo Picornie was beaten to death. In 2009 majors of Amsterdam and Rotterdam made an agreement (along with KNVB) that during “De Klassieker” visiting fans are banned from that match.

Ajax entered this game as second team in Netherland with four points behind PSV Eindhoven. Feyenoord was on third place eight points behind Ajax. Whit two coaches that gain offensive philosophy it was expected to be a good game with a lot of goal opportunities. At the end we saw a strange game where Feyenoord was dominating and making chances, while Ajax was mostly thinking about saving their goal then to go and start attacking.

As usual in derby matches home side manage to have first chance, in first attack Milik shot was blocked. In the next ten minutes there was only one team on the field Feyenoord. Feyenoord had three opportunities in this period but they miss them all. In 12’ best chance for Ajax in the whole game, Bazoer shot from outside the box was close but not close enough to give home side a lead. Until the halftime Feyenoord took the initiative and control the game but they couldn’t manage to make any real opportunities to score. Best opportunity Feyenoord had in 38’ after a corner kick but Clasies shot was cleared from goal line by Ajax attacker Milik. Statistic of first half was demoralizing for home side; they manage to have only 2 shot at Feyenoord goal, while Feyenoord had 12 shots toward Ajax goal. Second half wasn’t any different from first, Feyenoord was attacking but again they couldn’t produce any good chances for scoring. Most of goal attempts by Feyenoord players were blocked by thick Ajax defense. End game statistic was disastrous for Ajax; they manage to take only 5 goal attempts while Feyenoord was on fire they took 20 shots toward Ajax goal. But after the final referee whistle game end 0-0.

This draw didn’t change anything on the Eredivisie table. Ajax is still on second place, only now they are 6 points behind PSV Eindhoven (who beat Cambuur 2-1). Feyenoord remains on third place with two points in front PEC Zwolle (Draw against AZ Alkmaar 1-1). At the end Ajax fans can be happy that they didn’t lost and Feyenoord lost great opportunity to get close to Ajax on the table.
