WHC Quarterfinals: Germany, Poland, Denmark and France join Qatar, Croatia, Spain and Slovenia in battle for semifinals

World Handball Championship:

Today we found out last 4 teams that manage to go into quarterfinals of World Handball Championship in Qatar. Yesterday winners Qatar, Slovenia, Spain and Croatia we add today winners Germany, Poland, Denmark and France.

Germany – Egypt 23-16 (12-8)

Germany took the first place in so-called “death group” in front Denmark, Poland, Argentina and Russia and nobody expect Egypt to give them any hard time. Germany started strong and already in 9’ it was 4-1. Egypt had a hard time scoring they made a lot of technical errors and German goalkeeper Carsten Lichtlein was excellent today. With these problems for Egypt, Germany was extending their lead and in 19’ it was four goals difference. Game was over in first seven minutes of second half when Germany made 5-0 and went on big 17-8. At that point game was over for Egypt and Germany easily finish the game with 23-16.

Poland – Sweden 24-20 (10-11)

Poland manage to come back in second half and to kick Sweden out of Championship. In a good first half Poland was mostly in the lead, Sweden took the early lead but Poland manages to quickly take the lead in 16’ it was 5-4. Biggest lead Poland had in 25’ 8-5 but in last five minutes they received 6 goals and score only 2 for the halftime score 11-10 for Sweden. Start of the second half was mostly play goal by goal and Sweden was holding their two goals difference. From 38’ until 42’ Poland manages to score three quick goals and to get them into the lead, lead that would give them win at the end. In 48’ they went on two goals difference and until the last minutes of the game they keep that difference.

Iceland – Denmark 25-30 (10-16)

Both of these teams disappointed us in group stage on this Championship, but in this game Denmark shown how though and good they can be. Iceland was without the goal for first 8’ and when they score their first goal in this game score was 5-1 for Denmark. Until the halftime Denmark was extending their lead and in 14’ they had their biggest difference of seven goals (10-3). Iceland just couldn’t find any solution in their attack or defense. In second half Iceland was better than in first half, but they couldn’t start lowering Denmark goal difference.

France – Argentina 33-20 (16-6)

Argentina surprise everyone in this Championship when they draw against Denmark and beat Russia to take fourth place in Group D. But France was just too tough for them. France starts strong and took the lead, from that point they just start extending their goal lead minute by minute. Argentina couldn’t find answer in attack to very though France defense and if they found than Thierry Omeyer would save France goal. In first 24’Argentina manage to score only 4 goals while France scored 11. Until the halftime France extends their goal lead to massive +10. Second half was just formality that need to be played, France drop to lower gear and Argentina manage to do something in attack. But they couldn’t start reducing France lead. At the end France win with 33-20.
