Jerome Fernandez is no longer captain of France national team

Handball News:

France national handball team is in new problems. After their last night victory over Egypt (28-24), France coach Claude Onesta said that Jerome Fernandez is no longer captain of France national team.

Fernandez was shocked by this statement he said that he immediately went to Onesta and asks what happened, but only answer that he got was it is all in for greater cause and nothing personal.

Many journalist stands in Fernandez defense saying that Onesta could at least told him at least earlier and not via press conference, but Onesta said that he already told Fernandez few weeks back and that he don’t have any interest in rumors and speculation.

Who will be the New France captain remains to see, Nikola Karabatic stand in front of the rest as possible new France captain? But the mystery remain why did Onesta do that now and not before the World Handball Champion.

At the moment France is doing well in Championship, they beat Czech Republic in first round 30-27 and in second they were better than Egypt 28-24. Currently they are on the top of Group C with Sweden both with 4 points. Fernandez played both of these games, but he wasn’t on his level. Against Czech he had 0/4 and against Egypt slightly better 1/2, total in two games only 1 goal from 6 attempts only 17%.

Jerome Fernandez debuted for France national team in 1997 and till then he holds the record for the number of goals for France national team (1284). With France he won two Olympic gold medals (2008;2012), three gold medals (2001;2009;2011) and two bronze medals (2003;2005) from World Handball Championships and from European Championship three gold medals (2006;2010;2014) and one bronze medal (2008), total 8 gold medals and 3 bronze medals.

Fernandez started his career in Toulouse 1997 and from there he played in Montpellier (1999-2002), Barcelona (2002-2008), BM Ciudad Real (2008-2010), THW Kiel (2010-2011) and then in 2011 he return back to Toulouse. From club European trophies Fernandez has EHF Champions League (2005), EHF Cup (2003) and European Super cup (2004).

How will this affect France team spirit we will see it tonight against Iceland at 18:00GMT.
