Since LeBron James’ return from nearly a two week absence, the Cleveland Cavaliers hold a 4-1 record with impressive wins over the Los Angeles Clippers and Chicago Bulls. LeBron is averaging 30 points, 7 rebounds and 6 assists since his return, and has generally looked more active and athletic following the short break. So, is it safe to say, with a fully healthy LeBron, that the Cavs have figured it out?
The short answer is: not quite. While the Clippers and Bulls wins are impressive, the Bulls are currently in a slump and the Clippers have been underwhelming to this point in the season. That being said, it is a great sign for Cleveland that LeBron is back and healthy. He is the clear leader of this team both on and off the court, which was abundantly clear with how much the team struggled in his absence, even with star players like Kevin Love and Kyrie Irving.
The Cavs are also beginning to get contributions from Timofey Mozgov and J.R. Smith, players they recently acquired via trade. Coach David Blatt has changed his defensive strategy, especially on pick and rolls, with Mozgov able to protect the paint and Smith has been an offensive spark with his 3-point shooting. Cleveland will also get Iman Shumpert back very soon, who will improve the team’s perimeter defense.
Moving forward, the Cavs will need to prove that their defense can be stout when they need it to be. A great offense will only take them so far. Only three NBA teams in the last 30 years have won a championship without a top 10 defense and as good as the Cavs are on offense, their current defensive effort will not be good enough if they hope to make it to the NBA Finals.
