UEFA Champions League: Draw in Basel and Real Madrid win in Gelsenkirchen

UEFA Champions League, Round Of 16 Match Reports:


UEFA Champions League continues today with two more games of round 16. In Switzerland Basel and Porto played 1-1 and in Germany Real Madrid beat Schalke 04 2-0.


Basel – FC Porto 1 – 1

Porto manages to break the Basel and to go home with a good score. Porto was dominant during the entire game; they got 63%-37% ball possession. Basically Basel scored goal from first and only goal attempt, while Porto had 15 goal attempts. Basel started in more defensive 4-2-3-1 formation with par of defensive midfielders while Porto started in their usual offensive 4-3-3 formation. Basel take the lead from first action in the game, in 11’ Derlis Gonzales scored after one excellent through ball from Fabian Frei and that was all from Basel. From that point until the end there was only one team on the pitch. Porto tried hard to score and equalizer but Basel defense was strong until 78’ when Walter Samuel hand play in the box. Danilo converts the penalty kick into 1-1.


Schalke 04 – Real Madrid 0 – 2

In a good game Real Madrid manage to take a “lucky” win and maybe what is more important for Real fans is the fact that Cristiano Ronaldo finally scored after three games without goal. Di Matteo sends his team in defensive 5-3-2 formation against Ancelotti offensive 4-3-3. Schalke tried to play Atletico Madrid play, they would leave Real ball possession and then from fast counter breaks try to score. After couple of long shots from each side in 26’ Cristiano Ronaldo scored for Real Madrid after a good cross by Daniel Carvajal. In 41’ Ronaldo could score his second but his shot went near the post. At this point Real was dominating in both possession and goal chances. Closest to scoring equalizer Schalke was in 74’ when Felix Platte shot from outside the box hit the bar, ball deflect to Atsuto Uchida but his shot saved by Casillas. And then in the next attack Marcelo scored superb goal from outside the box on the right side. Real Madrid finishes the game with 61%-39% ball possession but 11-8 in-goal attempts.


Second legs are on schedule to play on 10 March 19:45 GMT.
