Another coach has paid the price of poor performance in the last IHF World Handball Championship in Qatar, earlier this month Croatian Handball Association sacked Slavko Goluza after achieving only 6th place in WHC. Now Russian coach Oleg Kuleshov and his assistant Alexander Rymanov offer to resign and according to statement from Russian Handball Federation they accept their letter of resignation.
Russian handball is in big problems, for the last 15 years they didn’t bring any medals from World Handball Championship. Russia was once the most feared national team in the World, but that reputation slowly decayed and now they are a team on who you can build a goal difference. After disappointing 16th place in 2009 WHC and failed to qualify in 2011, Russian surprise everyone in Spain 2013. Kuleshov and Rymanov manage to lead Russia on the 7th place, newspapers in Russia start writing about comeback of Russian handball and Kuleshov was miracle worker. But then happened Qatar and they took 19th place, if we exclude the WHC that they didn’t qualify that is the lowest rank they made ever.
This resignation offer is second one from Kuleshov and Rymanov, first one they offer after the loss against Argentina (27-30) in group stage, but Russian Handball Federation didn’t accept it. Kuleshov said that they did not fulfill their task and after two defeats at the start of the tournament they couldn’t bring the team back on the wining tracks. At the end Russia end as one of the weakest team from Europe, only national team (from Europe) that is worst than them is debuting Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Important task of finding a new coach is given to former national coach Vladimir Maksimov. Maksimov formed a task force that will find suitable candidates to fill the role of Russian NT coach. But they don’t have much time since Russia is soon playing their qualification games for EHF European Championship. On 28 April they will be facing Ukraine and then they have two games against Hungary.
After poor performance in Qatar, Oleg Kuleshov resigns as Russian national coach
