THW Kiel and Meshkov Brest open the last round of Velux EHF Champions’ League Group A. Meshkov need to win in this game to have any chances to go into the next round while Kiel already secure first place in the group. This was also important game for La Rioja since if Kiel would win that means they are going into the next stage no matter how their last game against Paris Saint-Germain ends.
Meshkov took an early lead 2-0 and holding them into the game for bigger part of first half. In 21’ at the result of 10-10 Kiel putt into the “second gear” and scored 7 goals while receiving only 1. At that point game was lost for guests. In second half Kiel continue their play from last nine minutes of first half. And in 45’ score was 26-16 for Kiel, it could be a lot worse for Meshkov if they didn’t had very good Croatian goalkeeper Ivan Pesic. Until the end Pesic was keep Meshkov around -10 since Kiel was dominating, their transition into attack and big pool of good players made them unstoppable for Meshkov. At the end home side win with 33-22.
Meshkov played pretty bad this game and they can thank their goalkeeper Ivan Perisic and Dzianis Rutenka and Nenad Manojlovic for keeping them in the game for first 20 minutes. Best in home sides were Serbian player Marko Vujin who scored 6 goals, while Nenad Manojlovic was best scorer for guests with 4 goals. Interesting thing is that all players (except goalkeeper) from THW Kiel were scorers in this game.
With new win for THW Kiel we now know all clubs from Group A that are going into the round of 16. From first spot we got German powerhouse THW Kiel, probably the richest handball club in the world will be on second place Paris Saint-Germain, RK Prvo Plinarsko Drustvo Zagreb is on third and Naturhouse La Rioja will go as last team from Group A.
