UEFA Champions League: Money can buy you all

Soccer News:

This week UEFA Champions League will continue their competition after winter break, after group stage we have 16 teams that will battle in knockout phase for the Champions League trophy.

We could call this also “UEFA Money League” because 16 clubs that are in knockout phase are worth 5.4 billion euros. That is the value of all players in these 16 clubs According to Transfermarkt Spain giants Real Madrid and Barcelona are on the “top of the food chain”. Real Madrid is first with 720 million euros total value and Barcelona is second with total value of 597 million euros, on third place is current UEFA Champions League winner Bayern Munich with 552 million euros of total value. On the bottom is Switzerland FC Basel whose total value is around 53 million euros, also Basel is only club in knockout stage that don’t have total value is above 100 million euros.

Interesting thing is that if we take last 4 clubs total value Basel (€53 million), Monaco (€122 million), Shakhtar Donetsk (€170 million), Bayer 04 Leverkusen (€178 million) and Porto (€180 million) their total value is still less than the value of first in knockout stage Real Madrid. If we compare these 16 teams with the 16 teams that get knocked out in group stage difference is around 2.5 billion euros.

We could play and compare these 16 teams with national leagues. Knockout phase of UEFA Champions League is more expensive than total value of Spain Primera Division (2.92 billion euros) who is now 2nd most expensive soccer league in world and Italian Seria A (2.40 billion euros) who are holding 3rd place on same list. If we look at other sports than knockout phase is almost the same as MLB (Major League Baseball) in USA which total worth is around 5.8 billion euros.

From 50 most expensive players in the world only 4 are not playing in clubs that are in knockout phase of UEFA Champions League they are Hulk (Zenit, €45 million), Gonzalo Higuain (Napoli, €40 million), Axel Witsel (Zenit, €35 million) and Raheem Sterling (Liverpool, €30 million).
