A lot of players have been linked with transfers to Chelsea and Schalke 04 defender Benedikt Howedes is another one of them. He recently made some comments in which he expressed desire that he would like to leave his current team and head to England. The German centre-back has been playing great for Schalke, however it seems that he would like to play for an even bigger team and Chelsea are the leaders for Howedes’ signature.
“I owe Schalke a lot. I have had a great experience during my time here,” said Howedes, “However, if I were to imagine moving abroad to experience a life in a foreign country, England would be my destination.”
Howedes is a very quality player, which has proved his class uncountable times. However, even though he is top-class, it’s very unclear if he would fit in Jose Mourinho’s rotations. John Terry has been an immovable starter and it’s hard to imagine that he will be the player sitting on the bench in favor of Howedes. Terry is still a very capable player and his leadership skills are almost irreplaceable. Gary Cahill will most likely be the player that could be benched in order for Howedes to get playing time.
As of now Howedes is rated at around £17 million – money that could probably be spent on something else, as Chelsea currently has one of the best defenses in the Barclay’s Premier League. Howedes could be a key player in either Arsenal or Manchester United, but in Chelsea he would just be one of the many.
With his comments, the German defender will most likely be the subject of much transfer rumors in the next couple of months, but it’s very questionable whether the reports of Chelsea being interested in him will develop into a bid. Mainly, this is because of the fact that the options at the back are quite a lot for Chelsea and Howedes may just be unnecessary.
