This week R9 of Velux EHF Champions League, we saw some interesting game and some incredible wins. Also we now know most of the teams that will go in round 16.
Group A:
Group A open with the game between HC Prvo Plinarsko Drustvo Zagreb and Naturhouse La Rioja. Zagreb won with stunning last second goal from almost half of the field by Dusan Celica 25-24. Horvat and Valcic was best scorer in Zagreb with 6 goals, while Jimenez Reina scored 5 for guests. On Sunday Paris Saint-Germain beat HC Meshkov Brest 36-25 and THW Kiel demolishes HC Metalurg 35-16. After 9 rounds Kiel, PSG and Zagreb are going into the next round, for the last spot we will see a fight between Naturhouse La Rioja and HC Metalurg. Naturhouse is playing against PSG and Metalurg is going against Zagreb.
Group B:
On Thursday Flensburg beat Besiktas 31-27 and on Sunday we watch a derby game bettween Barcelona and KIF Kolding Kobenhavn. Barcelona dominates during the entire game and at the end score was 33-27. Rutenka was the best scorer for Barcelona with 6 goals while Spellerberg scored 11 for KIF Kolding. In the last game Alingsas lost against Orlen Wisla 22-23. In Group B we know all teams but except first place we don’t know from what positions they are going into round 16. Barcelona is first with 15 points, then KIF Kolding and Flensburg got 12 and Orlen Wisla is on fourth place with 11 points. In last round KIF Kolding is going to play against Alingsas and Flensburg is going to play against Orlen Wisla.
Group C:
Most interesting game of Group C was game between Vardar and Montpellier. Montpellier need this win to catch the top team in Group C. Vardar was better team they got +5 on halftime (18-13) and they keep that goal difference until the end. Final score was 30-26 for Vardar. Dibirov was the best scorer with 12 goals while best scorer from recent World Handball Championship Gajic scored 6 for Montpellier. On Sunday German powerhouse Rhein-Neckar beat Chekovski Medvedi 32-26 and Veszprem beat RK Celje Pivovarna with 29-26. With this loss Celje lost all chances to see the next round Veszprem will go from first place and in head-to-head game Vardar and Rhein-Neckar will decide about 2nd and 3rd place. France Montpellier is going in round of 16 from 4th place.
Group D:
Vive Tauron Kielce is still only club in Velux EHF Champions League that is not defeated. In this round they beat Dunkerque with 36-32.Probably the biggest surprise in this round was loss from Pick Szeged by Kadetten Schaffhausen 32-29. Liniger with 8 and Stojanovic with 6 were the best scorers on home team. For guests Ilyes and Prodanovic scored 7. To make things interesting in last round HC Motor Zaporozhe manage to beat Aalborg 36-30 and earning them two new points. Group D is most uncertain; two first teams are going in round of 16 Vive Tauron Kielce and Pick Szeged. But the rest 4 teams are all on 6 points. In last round HC Motor is going against undefeated Vive Tauron Kielce and Aalborg is going against Pick Szeged. Probably the winner of a game between Dunkerque and Kadetten will be one of teams that go in round of 16.
