Arsenal dealt a blow as Borussia Dortmund midfielder set for contract renewal talks

Bundesliga News:

After suffering through the most part of 2014/15 season where they gathered just 4 wins in the opening 6 months, the 2012/13 Champions League finalists are slowly getting back on track as their league form suggests.

With 2 wins in the last 2 fixtures against sides that reside above them in the Bundesliga table, Borussia Dortmund have been able to stretch themselves out of the relegation zone. Having scored 7 fixtures in the last two matches, Borussia Dortmund have scored the same number of goals in 2 matches that they managed in the last 9 before them.

And since it is becoming a sort of tradition at the Bundesliga club to offer their star players new contracts with certain pros and cons, Iikay Gundogan has been the latest player who is all set to pledge his future with Dortmund.

Although in terms of Marco Reus the contract talks were streamlined, Dortmund might have to play hardball with Gundogan if they are to bind him in another contract this season. Gundogan is currently in contract with Dortmund that will keep him at the German side since 2016.

However, seeing players like Gotze and Lewandowski snatched from beneath their noses, Dortmund are keen to complete this deal as soon as possible.

This news has come at a time when certain Premier League clubs were hovering around Dortmund for snatching their prized assets. One of the clubs were Arsenal and since players like Mikel Arteta and Mathieu Flamini are running out of contract in the summer, Gundogan was seen as someone to be the ideal choice for the Gunners.

Although Gundogan was sidelined for nearly 14 months, his return to 1st team action in October has rubbished any claims that were raising concerns about his fitness. And if reports coming out from various media outlets are believed to be true, the player’s and club representatives will meet each other after the 1st Leg of Champions League next week.
