EHF Velux Champions League: New format with more clubs and more prize money from season 2015/2016

EHF Velux Champions League:


After the group stage of EHF Velux Champions League we got announce from EHF that in the next season there will be a change in format for Champions League. But that is not the only change for the upcoming season, there will also be a prize reward change for the upcoming season.


Similar to UEFA Champions League in EHF Velux Champions League every team receives the same sum for participating in the group phase. Also team gets prize if they qualifies for the next round, the prize money rise continuously up to Final Four. That means longer you stay in EHF Velux Champions League the more money you get. Also EHF announce that they raise the Final Four prizes, so the winner of EHF Velux Champions League will receive 500.000€, while the other three teams receive the prize money in total of 500.000€. If we compare these changes with the current prize money then the total prize money is higher around 30%.


Peter Vargo EHF Marketing director said that Champions League is a product that is very much alive and evolves and it requires adjustments. EHF President Jean Brihault thinks that this is positive step and it will improve attraction of EHF Velux Champions League for television, sponsors and media.


New format change for EHF Velux Champions league include 28 teams, group phase and two knock-out phases after that best 4 teams will play Final Four to decide the winner of Champions League. With the increase to 28 clubs it will give some new clubs chance in EHF Champions League and with the new clubs comes new market for media and sponsors.
