Manchester United closing in to sign Fabio Coentrao from Real Madrid

Manchester United transfer News

After months of speculation and hours of brain busting rumors that were linking the Portuguese left full-back to Manchester United, it seems that the pieces are now falling into place regarding the summer move of the Portuguese to Manchester United.

Arrived in Real Madrid in 2011 with a sole objective of being a constant member of the first team, Coentrao has mostly been reduced to the bench due to the versatility of Marcelo on the pitch. He has just made 53 appearances for the LOS BLANCOS over a wide-period of 4 years since his arrival.

In his 4-year stay at the Santiago Bernabeu, Coentrao has made just 53 appearances for Real Madrid.

Although his lack of first team action might have hampered his confidence, it has nothing to do with his price tag. If Manchester United are to cash in on the Portuguese in the summer transfer window, they might have to extract 25million pounds from their coffers.

Thus, if they can convince the Portuguese of landing at the Old Trafford with this price tag, Coentrao would be the 2nd highest paid defender in the history of Manchester United. Currently, Rio Ferdinand is the highest paid defender in the history of Manchester United with a transfer fee close to the region of 28-million pounds.

While Manchester United has a plethora of options when it comes to the left back position when Luke Shaw as the main candidate, the redundant injuries to the English International this season has forced Louis Van Gaal to alter his tactics.

In Shaw’s absence from the starting lineup, both Daley Blind and Ashley Young have been devised with the role of playing in the left back position. Blind, to his credit has done remarkably well and was a major reason of Manchester United’s victory over Liverpool a fortnight ago.

However, with Champions League looming over the horizon for Manchester United next season, they can ill afford to go into the competition with such part-timers. Looking at the stats of Marcelo and although he has played less, his quality was evident whenever he was on the pitch.

With a passing accuracy of 87% for the LOS BLANCOS in the 7 appearances that he made, Coentrao has indicated that he has what it takes to succeed week in, week out for any team in the World.
