Luis Enrique: I want Xavi to stay at Barcelona

Barcelona News

As they say that water has flown under the bridges, it seems that the current Barcelona manager has little belief over this proverb. With the move of Xavi Hernandez to the 2022 World Cup hosts Qatar all but announced, the former Espanyol boss has rolled the dice in a last ditch effort to prolong the career of Xavi Hernandez at Barcelona.

Xavi Hernández

In a match where Barcelona had to win to keep their 4-points lead over Real Madrid intact, the absence of Iniesta, Neymar and Pique might have given the manager a headache. With a relatively naïve squad hosting Almeria at the Camp Nou, Barcelona would have struggled – only if the old-guard in Xavi Hernandez had not come to the rescue,

Playing in the midfield which had new names like Sergi Roberto at its heart, Xavi controlled the game from the left side and provided the front three their usual space to run riot. While his name wasn’t on the goal either on the assist list, Xavi played in between the lines to help his team-mates in securing a routine win.

And just like he has been woken from deep slumber, Luis Enrique has reiterated his claim and pleaded Xavi Hernandez to extend his stay at the Camp Nou. In an interview which was given after yesterday’s win, Enrique insisted the Xavi would ‘’benefit greatly’’ if he can see the rest of his contract at Barcelona.

He has the affection of all the Barca fans and every football lover,” said the Barcelona boss. “He knows it and feels it. I would be pleased if he continues helping us, but I understand that he wants other experiences. Whatever he chooses will be good for Barca.”

“He knew it would be a special year for him and he has accepted it. He helps us both on and off the field.”

said the Barcelona boss after seeing his team stream-roll Almeria in a typical one-sided affair between both sides.

However, with ball now in the court of the 1-time World Cup winner, Barcelona have to play a waiting game in order to know that what lies ahead for them.
