Manchester United Vs Manchester City: 5 players that played for both sides

Premier League News

When both of these teams met for the first time this season last year, the Citizens were storming towards what it seemed at that time as yet another title. However, with just several months separating the two fixtures, both teams are now fighting for a common goal – to be in Champions League next season. Thus, while both of these teams now share a common target, they also share a group of players that switched the sides.

Here are 5 players that played for both Manchester sides in their career: –

Carlos Tevez

While there are many other players that burned the red flag to enamor the blue one, rarely has been such a player who is so hated in the red half of the Manchester. Having won two Premier League titles for Manchester United and 1 for Manchester City, Tevez had a knack of scoring important goals. However, in addition to his goals which he scored regularly for both, Tevez is vividly remembered for his ‘’RIP-Fergie” jibe on Sir Alex Ferguson. He ditched Manchester United in 2009 and joined Manchester City for a fee of 47-million pounds.

Owen Hargreaves

For a player whose career will be remembered more for injuries than for his performances, Hargreaves might be the least famous player that shared the distinction of playing for the bitter rivals. After seeing his Manchester United cut-short by injuries time and again, the Canadian born footballer joined Manchester City in 2011. However, the injuries didn’t forget his door-step as he played just 1 game for Manchester City in the whole of 2011-12 season after which he announced his retirement from football.

Andy Cole

Being a player who was an important member of the Manchester United squad that won the treble in 1999, Cole was a celebrated footballer in the red half of Manchester for a better part of 6-years. After scoring 93 goals in 195 appearances for the Red devils, Cole took a long-drive in his career before returning to Manchester. After leaving in 2001, Cole came back in Manchester in 2005 to play for Manchester City. In the 1 season that he spent there, Cole enjoyed success with 9 goals in 22 appearances.

Peter Schmeichel

While the word “Legend’’ is a bit over-used these days, here is a player who is a practical example of this word. During his 8 year spell at the Old Trafford during which he won 5 League and 1 Champions League title, Schmeichel was as great a goal-keeper as was any at the English soil during that period of the history. After leaving Manchester United in 1999, Cole joined Manchester City in 2003 to play a brief period at the spell.

Terry Cooke

For a player who spent 5 years at the Old Trafford and managed just 5 appearances for the first team in between, it is fair to say that Terry Cooke wasn’t an enamored figure in the red half of Manchester during his 5-year spell from 1994-99. After spending a better part of 5-years on loan with non-league clubs, Cooke was sold to Manchester City in 1999 however, like his previous days at the Old Trafford, Cooke failed to find his mark at the Etihad Stadium as well.
