The Houston Rockets have been flying high this season, even though they are playing in the very tough Western Conference. However, they are facing some very hard times ahead, as their superstar center, Dwight Howard is expected to miss some time, as he recovers from the knee injury he sustained in the match with the Phoenix Suns on 23rd January. It is reported that Howard will be out for at least a month. Howard is still in the proces of getting additional consultations and treatment in order to determine the best way to treat his injured right knee.
Dwight Howard has been playing a crucial role for Houston, as he has been the main reason for their improved defense. The Rockets, however, should not worry too much, as they have a quite deep frontcourt that should be able to carry the workload while Howard is out. Josh Smith and Donatas Motiejunas are very two very capable big men that have proven to be able to work together during the season and Howard’s absence could even be beneficial for the development ot Motiejunas. D12 is averaging 16.3 points, 11 rebounds and 1.4 blocked shots per game this season, but was not chosen by the coache to play in the All-Star Game in New York.
The Rockets are currently sitting on fifth place in the Western Conference standings with the Dallas Mavericks not too far behind them. This absence of Howard would probably mean that Houston will slip at least one place down the table, but this would not mean that D12 is going to be rushed to come back. The long-term health of the big man is definitely more important than home-court advantage for this season.
