On Sunday 1 February, Udo Lattek died from Perkins disease in Koln. Who is Udo Lattek? Udo Lattek is one of most successful coaches in history of soccer and most successful coach with Germans teams. During his career Udo manage to won 14 major titles with Bayern Munich, Borussia Monchengladbach and Barcelona.
With Giovanni Trapattoni, Udo Lattek is the only coach that manages to win all three European competitions Champions League, UEFA Cup (now Europa League) and Cup Winners Cup. But Udo Lattek is the only coaches that manage do that with three different clubs Bayern Munich (Champions League), Borussia Monchengladbach (UEFA Cup) and Barcelona (Cup Winners Cup).
Udo Lattek started his coach career in Bayern Munich in March 1970; interesting thing is that he didn’t have any previous coaching experience only recommendation from Franz Beckenbauer. At that point Gerd Muller and Sepp Maier played for Bayern Munich. Lattek introduce young talents Paul Breitner and Uli Hoenes and went into history. He won three Bundesliga title in row and was first German club that won Champions League in 1974. More than half of player, that played for Germany national team that won World Cup in 1974 and European Championship in 1976 where from Udo Lattek Bayern Munich.
After no trophies in season 1974/5 Udo Lattek was sacked from Bayern Munich coach position and in beginning of 1975/6 he was appointed as Borussia Monchengladbach coach. With Monchengladbach Lattek manage to won two more Bundesliga titles and Cup UEFA in 1977, while in finals of Champions League he lost against Liverpool.
In 1981 Lattek was appointed as FC Barcelona coach and in first season he beats Standard Liege in Cup Winners Cup final and won his last missing European trophy. But in Spain national division his Barcelona didn’t play well and after two-year without domestic trophy Lattek gets fired.
In 1983 Lattek return to Bayern Munich and with them he won 3 Bundesliga titles and 2 DFB Pokal. In his last season as coach in Bayern Munich he was beaten in Champions League final this time by Porto in 1987.
During his coaching career Udo Lattek coach 760 games with 7 clubs he won 422, draws 181 and lost 157.
