The Winter Transfer Window has end and the time has come to reviews the moves that were made by the clubs all around the Barclay’s Premier League. Even though the most money for transfers as spent in England, there weren’t a lot of blockbuster trades. The whole month of January was relatively quiet and not a lot of things happened. It should be noted that the total amount that was spent by the clubs in the Premier League this January was less than the money involved for exchanging Suarez, Torres and Carroll deals alone in 2011. Nevertheless, there were some significant moves that could have effect on the season’s outcome.
We will start with the teams that made most of the transfer window – Chelsea, Manchester City, West Bromwich Albion and Leicester City. Two of the biggest transfers were executed by the the squads that are fighting for the Premier League title – Chelsea and Manchester City. At the moment, the Citizens are sitting on the second spot in the table, but the fact that they signed Wilfried Bony gives very good chances of overcoming Chelsea. Bony is one of the best strikers in the league and will surely improve City’s attack. Nevertheless, Chelsea made a move of their own, signing Columbian star Juan Cuadrado. This transfer is expected to help Mourinho’s team solidify their position on top of the Premier League table. Cuadrado was lured to Stamford Bridge as a replacement to Andre Schurrle, who departed to Wolfsburg. Furthermore, one of better transfer during the winter window was made by the lowly Leicester City team. They signed the terrific Croatian striker Andrej Kramaric, who is expected to lift them from the bottom of the standings.
As we discussed the best transfers, we will now move on to the worst ones, or more accurately – those that didn’t happen. The teams that will most likely suffer from their inactivity on the market are Liverpool, Manchester United and partly Arsenal. It is widely known that Liverpool has a lot of depth problems, but no one from the team’s management did anything to try and sign some quality players. This mistake means that Liverpool most likely won’t be able to qualify for next season’s Champions League. Manchester United is the other big loser, as the Red Devils didn’t do anything to improve their defense. Not only that, but they also allowed Darren Fletcher and Wilfried Zaha to leave the team. As for Arsenal – they did sign Gabriel Paulista, but everyone expected a bit more. Their defense hasn’t been great this season and they should have signed someone to improve it.
All in all, it wasn’t the most eventful transfer window, but still it was an important one. Only time will tell whether the moves that were made are going to be positive or negative.
