NBA Rumors: Dallas Mavericks and San Antonio Spurs to go after LaMarcus Aldridge this summer

Basketball, NBA Rumors:

LaMarcus Aldridge still hasn’t made any announcement regarding all the rumors about him that have been circulating in the media lately. The big man has stated a couple of times that he wished to remain with the Portland Trail Blazers but given their early playoff exit this year, can he be trusted? Especially with the Dallas Mavericks and the San Antonio Spurs planning to go after him this summer.

The latest report on Aldridge was made by Marc Stein from ESPN:

“But the consistent word on the personnel grapevine at the minute informs us that San Antonio and Dallas not only believe they each have a real shot at signing him but are also legitimately in Aldridge’s thoughts. Does Aldridge, even accounting for his Dallas upbringing, really want to go home to North Texas or down to South Texas, where he’d essentially be casting himself as the heir apparent to either Dirk Nowitzki or Tim Duncan? Wouldn’t he be putting himself in some awfully challenging circumstances to try to live up to the legacies of either of those certifiable legends?

Answer: We’re hearing Aldridge connected to both of those teams so frequently that you can only conclude that neither idea scares him. Yet sources insist — yes, at this early juncture — that San Antonio is near or at the top of Aldridge’s list … unless the Cleveland Cavaliers were to lose Kevin Love and then somehow manufacture a way to sign-and-trade for him.”

Aldridge will definitely be a pretty good fit for both squads. He is a talented power forward that can stretch the defense, shoot from mid-range and also score at will near the basket. The Mavericks and the Spurs would love to have them, especially with Duncan and Nowitzki nearing the end of their careers.

Nevertheless, it’s very unclear whether LaMarcus will choose to leave Portland. The Trail Blazers got beaten pretty badly by the Grizzlies in the first round of the playoffs this season, but injuries to key players should be taken into account. Nevertheless, the chances of Portland making significant changes to their roster for next year are quite minimal, which means that the team will most likely be out of title contention.

If Aldridge wants to win a championship soon, he should really think seriously about switching teams. The San Antonio Spurs would be the perfect destination for him, especially if Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili and Gregg Popovich decide not to retire before the beginning of the next season.
