SriLankan Cricket Team Under Attack In Pakistan

Gunmen opened fire on a bus carrying Sri Lankan players on its way to veneue at Lahore. During this counter attack, five policemen were killed and several were injured along with 5 Sri Lankan players. Chaminda Vaas, Thilan Samaraweera, Kumar Sangakkara, Ajantha Mendis, Thilan Thusara and Tharanga Paranavitana are amongst the players who got injured, while captain Mahela Jayawardene and Muttiah Muralitharan are said to be safe.

According to PCB officials 12 terresoits attacked on bus with heavy weapons including grenades and rocket launchers. Officials said the attack was bore the hallmakrs attack of mumbai in India in novermber 2008. Indian government balmed pakistan based Islamic groups.

This attack will become a big blow to pakistan cricket as already ICC and other countires cancelled their tour to Pakistan because of security concerns and this attack might be end of international cricket in Pakistan for a short term.

Sri Lankans are touring pakistan after India's cricketer pulled out of a scheduled tour of 3  test matches and 5 one day matches.

Tour Has Been Canceled

Terriost attacked the Sri Lankan cricket team when they were just couple of miles away from Gaddafi Stadium, venue for the second test match. Witnesses reported, a heavey brust of gunfire and explosions, as terrriots first aimed the policemen who were gurading the team.

During this attack atleast five policemen were killed. According to PCB officials Thilan Samaraweera and Kumara Sangakara were admited to Services hospital in Lahore.

Former Sri Lankan Captain Sanath Jayasuriya said, "The Players are shocked. They have never gone through anything like this before". Sri lankans players were evucated from stadium with help of Pakistaini air force helicopters.

A Pakistani air force helicopter has now evacuated members of the Sri Lankan team from Gaddafi Stadium, after Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapakse condemned the "cowardly terrorist attack" and ordered the players' immediate evacuation. Inspector General punjab police Habibur Rahman said, 10 to 12 attackers came to scene in Auto Rickshaws and opened fire with Ak47, gurnades and rocket launchers. SL Sports Minister confirms players' injury Sri Lankan Sports Minister Gamini Lokuge has confirmed the players injury in this terriable attack. Sanaraweera and Sangakara remains in hospital after being shot in thigh.

Punjab Governor Salmaan Tahseer told a news channel, "The team is shaken, but I can confirm that there are no serious injuries to the players. None of them are critical. "This was an organised attack. They were terrorists. They used sophisticated weapons. Five Pakistani policemen have been killed. "Obviously the tour has been cancelled. We have arranged for the Sri Lankan players to be taken out to the airport and they will fly out of the country this afternoon."
